    About Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs

There are many indications that have benefited from the treatment of Chinese Medicine and with a 2,000 year history, the list is extensive. It is currently used by a quarter of the world’s population, mostly in Asia, and it is growing in popularity in the West as scientific trials prove its efficacy. Although often thought of as a means of pain relief, it is in fact used to treat people with a wide range of indications. A TCM practitioner seeks to find the underlying imbalance in the body and treat the root cause as well as the symptoms of the disease. These imbalances can be due to age, emotions, stress, diet, chemicals and other influences.

At ACRH, we use acupuncture, Chinese herbs and Eastern Nutrition to put you back on the path to wellness. At the initial intake, the practitioner will assess your individual pattern by asking you a series of questions, taking your pulse and studying your tongue. Your signs and symptoms will tell us how to treat your underlying pathology that is causing any disharmony in the body.

After this initial assessment, you will be given an acupuncture treatment tailored to you. We only use sterile, single-use disposable needles that are about the diameter of a hair. Needles are retained for 25-30 minutes as you rest comfortably on the treatment table. Moxabustion, the Chinese herb mugwort, may also be used to warm the channels of the body. Electro-stimulation may be attached to certain needles and is used to increase stimulation to particular regions of the body. It will typically feel like a gentle tapping or buzzing and the sensation dissipates within 5 minutes of the treatment. Cupping may also be used to release tension in certain areas as well.

Chinese herbal medicine is often used in conjunction with acupuncture treatments. Traditionally, herbs are dispensed in their raw form and boiled into a tea. At ACRH, patients are prescribed a raw herb tea or a granular formula (which only needs hot water added) depending on the patient. We have a granular and raw herb pharmacy on-site to make it easier to fill your prescriptions. All herbs have been analyzed for heavy metals and harmful bacteria such as salmonella, E. coli, molds, yeast, pesticides and fungicides, and tested with high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) which measures potency by assuring consistent levels of active ingredients.
