FAQ

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very different from hypodermic needles used for shots. They are typically as thin as a hair and barely felt upon insertion. There are certain sensations associated with the therapeutic effects of acupuncture, including slight cramping, heaviness, distention, tingling or electric sensation traveling along a meridian. If any discomfort is experienced, it is usually mild.

Are the needles reused?

All acupuncture needles are pre-sterilized, single patient use only to assure absolute control over cross-infection. Once used, they are placed in a medical sharps container and disposed.

How many treatments will I need?

The nature, severity and history of each individual's complaint determine the number of treatments necessary. On average, 6-15 treatments are generally adequate for the majority of chronic complaints. Many acute conditions may only require a single treatment and some degenerative conditions may require scores of treatments.

Infertility may require 3-6 months in order to rebalance the reproductive system. If undergoing assisted reproductive techniques such as IUI, IVF, clomid or injectable cycles, we usually recommend starting treatment 2-3 months prior to the start of the cycle.
