Female Fertility
It seems that the incidence of infertility is getting more and more prevalent in our society. Infertility is diagnosed when a couple is trying to conceive for 1 year without success. Whether you have been through multiple IVF cycles or you are just starting out on your journey, Chinese Medicine can help you to improve your reproductive health which makes it easier for conception to take place.
Treatment length is generally 3-12 months using a combination of acupuncture, herbs, diet and lifestyle changes. We work with patients in conjunction with their gynecologists or reproductive endocrinologists as needed.
There are many different reasons that you may be having trouble conceiving. Most commonly, the following are implicated:
High FSH/Poor Ovarian Reserve/Advanced Maternal Age
When women reach a certain age (usually over 35), or their blood test shows "elevated FSH" levels, or even a lack of response to FSH stimulating medications that are used by reproductive endocrinologists, most women are told that their chances of conception are very low and/or they need to think about donor eggs. Chinese Medicine can actually help the eggs to develop in a healthier environment, thereby increasing the health of the egg. It takes a follicle in the ovary 120 days to go from its antral state to a mature egg upon ovulation. That is why acupuncture and Chinese Medicine will work best when used for at least 3-6 months and sometimes up to 12 months. In this time frame, we often see a lowering of the FSH, better outcomes for IVF, IUI cycles and natural pregnancies.
PCOS/Ovulation Disorders
Chinese Medicine can be very effective in helping women that do not ovulate to ovulate. It can help regulate the hormones and the menstrual cycle. A study at Goteborg University in Sweden showed that acupuncture may help some PCOS women to ovulate. We have successfully treated many women at our clinic that had amenorrhea and they are now ovulating on a regular basis. Sometimes this can take quite a few months for any results to show for more severe cases, but more often than not, women find that they do have shorter cycles.
Unknown Causes
Sometimes, every test that is run on a couple shows absolutely nothing wrong. Western Medicine cannot give any answer as to why there is no conception. Often, Chinese Medicine can find an imbalance through our diagnostic techniques, which are treated via acupuncture and herbs, thereby making conception more likely.
Other
Endometriosis, auto-immune disorders, recurrent miscarriage, luteal phase defect, thin endometrial lining, fibroids and many other disorders can be successfully treated with Chinese Medicine.
